Dental extraction

There are several reasons to request the extraction of a tooth:

-the tooth is very decayed

-severe gum problems (periodontitis)

-the tooth can be broken beyond repair

-sometimes the tooth must be extracted because it is positioned incorrectly (for example the wisdom molars)

-preparing an arch for the insertion of an orthodontic braket

-serious infections at the top of the root which are beyond treatment

Tooth extraction procedure

1. The first examination and the diagnosis

-the visual examination determines whether the extraction is necessary

-a tooth X-ray helps to evaluate the internal structure of the tooth, root and bone in the area of the root

-the medical history of the patient is recorded. Make sure you tell your dentist about any problems concerning any previous extractions, any bleeding problem, other medical problems you have, allergies or treatments you are undergoing.

2. The anaesthesia of the area of the tooth to be extracted

3. The tooth extractions

Expectations for recovery

In the case of a normal, simple extraction, the patient is sent home and the place of the extracted tooth is left to heal. The bleeding should stop in the first hours. You can continue with your regular daily activities but avoid strenuous physical activities and exposure to powerful sun.

Recommendations concerning the post-surgery care following the extraction of a tooth

-Hold a gauze compress bitten firmly for 1-2 hours in order to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding continues change the compress and keep biting it firmly until the bleeding stops.

-Do not use mouthwash for 24 hours after the extraction

-In case of small bleedings, take a mouthful of cold salty water and keep it in your mouth until it reaches the body temperature.

-Do not rinse with chamomile tea, water or other liquids for 24 hours

-Brush normally except for the extraction area where you should avoid brushing

-If possible, eat for 2-3 days, light, cold foods without spices

-Do not drink milk, yogourt or other related products

-Avoid smoking and drinking

-Mild pains can be controlled with the pain medication indicated by the dentist

The effect of the lack of teeth

When a tooth is extracted, the surrounding teeth have the tendency to recline significantly, and the antagonist tooth to descend in the free space, which can have a major impact on the health of the teeth. Even the extraction of a single tooth can lead to chewing and biting problems, and periodontal problems for the surrounding teeth.
