Extraction of wisdom molars (teeth)

The wisdom tooth is the third molar. Usually a person has 3 permanent molars. The third molar grows around the age of 18-20 years.

In fact, the wisdom teeth are not different from the other teeth except for the fact that they are the last to grow. They are as useful as the other teeth when they grow correctly and establish a good biting relation with the surrounding teeth having healthy gums around them. Unfortunately, these conditions are not always fulfilled.

When the molars fail to grow adequately, they can have an impact on all the other teeth. The dentist must examine the patient’s mouth, a X-ray may show if the molar in question is growing correctly or not. These impact teeth may cause a lot of problems. Here are some of the most common problems caused by wisdom molars:

-increased dental plaque

-caries on the surrounding teeth

-gum problems (infections around the wisdom tooth).

The growth of the wisdom tooth in inadequate conditions may require its removal. The early extraction will eliminate problems such as the impact on the second molar which could affect the latter.

The most frequent situation is the one in which these molars fail to completely cut through the gum, being only half way out and, most often, causing pain in that area, which radiate to the ear. Opening the mouth becomes very painful, the gums swell up and any touch hurts. Without a doubt, the person experiencing these symptoms should come to the dentist, because this inflammation can give rise to complications and cause an abscess, which is much more difficult to treat. Then, there might be caries on the wisdom tooth. This tooth has an inadequate mineralization and, because of its position on the dental arch, it is less accessible to toothbrushing l. Sometimes, there are cases when the tooth did not grow on the arch in its usual place, but remained included in the bone, without cutting through the gum.

In this case, the intervention of the dentist is also recommended l. There are also cases in which the widom tooth cuts through the gum but comes out in an abnormal position: much inclined towards the cheek or the tongue.

Recommendations concerning the post-surgery care following the extraction of a tooth

-Hold a gauze compress bitten firmly for 1-2 hours in order to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding continues change the compress and keep biting it firmly until the bleeding stops.

-Do not use mouthwash for 24 hours after the extraction

-In case of small bleedings, take a mouthful of cold salty water and keep it in your mouth until it reaches the body temperature.

-Do not rinse with chamomile tea, water or other liquids for 24 hours

-Brush normally except for the extraction area where you should avoid brushing

-If possible, eat for 2-3 days, light, cold foods without spices

-Do not drink milk, yogourt or other related products

-Avoid smoking and drinking

-Mild pains can be controlled with the pain medication indicated by the dentist
